Cross-Sectional Area Calculator
Find the area of ten ideal solid or hollow sections.
Formula
In menu order: WH; WH/2; √3W²/4; πW²/4; πt(W−t); WH−(W−2u)(H−2t); I,C: 2Wt+(H−2t)u; T: Wt+(H−t)u; L: t(W+H−t).
Width / diameter W: 10 cm · Overall height H: 20 cm · Flange / wall thickness t: 2 cm · Web / sidewall thickness u: 1 cm · Cross-sectional area ≈ (2×(10 cm × 0.01 m/cm)×(2 cm × 0.01 m/cm)+((20 cm × 0.01 m/cm)-2×(2 cm × 0.01 m/cm))×(1 cm × 0.01 m/cm)+0×sqrt((20 cm × 0.01 m/cm)-2×(2 cm × 0.01 m/cm))+0×sqrt((10 cm × 0.01 m/cm)-(1 cm × 0.01 m/cm)))×10000
How to use
- Choose the section.
- Enter overall W and H; W is diameter for circles/tubes or side for an equilateral triangle.
- Set flange thickness t and web thickness u where used; read cm².
Examples
- I section W=10, H=20, t=2, u=1 cm: A=56 cm².
Frequently asked questions
Thicknesses?
Box: t at top/bottom, u at left/right. I/C/T: flange t, web u. Tube and L use t only.
Rounded corners?
No. Sections have sharp corners and constant thickness; rolled profiles may differ.
Unused fields?
Keep positive defaults. H is perpendicular height. Oversized thicknesses are rejected.
