Framing calculator
Count studs along a simple straight wall segment.
Formula
Studs = ceil(center span / spacing) + 1 + extras; length = studs × cut height
End-stud center span: 12 ft · Maximum center spacing: 16 in · Stud cut height: 8 ft · Studs ≈ ceil(((12 ft × 0.3048 m/ft)÷(16 in × 0.0254 m/in))×(1-8.881784197001252e-16))+1+(0) · Total stud length ≈ (10)×(8 ft × 0.3048 m/ft)
How to use
- Measure from first to last stud center.
- Enter maximum spacing and cut height.
- Add extra studs for your planned details.
Examples
- A 12 ft center span at 16 in spacing needs 10 studs before extras.
Frequently asked questions

Does this design a load-bearing wall?
No. Spacing, sizes and details must come from the design; defaults are examples.
What is excluded?
