Friction Calculator
Estimate maximum static friction and sliding friction from normal force and separate coefficients.
Formula
fs,max = μsN; fk = μkN.
Normal force: 100 N · Maximum static friction ≈ (0.5)×(100 N) · Sliding friction ≈ (0.3)×(100 N)
How to use
- Enter normal contact force, not automatically weight.
- Enter the two friction coefficients.
- Read the static limit and sliding force.
Examples
- N = 100 N, μs = 0.5 and μk = 0.3 give 50 N and 30 N.
Frequently asked questions
Is static friction always μsN?
No. That is its maximum; actual static friction adjusts to the applied tangential force.
Which way does friction act?
Against relative sliding or its tendency at the contact. Results here are magnitudes.
Are coefficients universal constants?
No. They depend on surfaces and conditions; this simple dry-friction model excludes fluid drag.
