Plywood calculator
Estimate oriented sheet positions without reusing cutoffs.
Formula
Sheets = ceil(field length / sheet length) × ceil(field width / sheet width)
Field length: 16 ft · Field width: 12 ft · Sheet length along field: 8 ft · Sheet width across field: 4 ft · Columns ≈ ceil(((16 ft × 0.3048 m/ft)÷(8 ft × 0.3048 m/ft))×(1-8.881784197001252e-16)) · Rows ≈ ceil(((12 ft × 0.3048 m/ft)÷(4 ft × 0.3048 m/ft))×(1-8.881784197001252e-16)) · Sheets ≈ (2)×(3)
How to use
- Enter the rectangular field dimensions.
- Align the sheet length with the intended field length.
- Read rows, columns and whole sheets.
Examples
- A 16 × 12 ft field uses six 8 × 4 ft sheets in this orientation.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the minimum sheet count?
No. It counts one sheet per grid position; cut planning may reuse offcuts.
Can sheets be rotated freely?
Not always. Face grain and supports affect structural orientation; follow the design.
Are joints and defects included?
No. This geometric estimate ignores panel gaps, kerf and damaged sheets; add them in the layout.
