Rate of return calculator
Measure total holding-period return from price changes and cash income.
Formula
Return (%) = (ending value − initial cost + cash income) / initial cost × 100.
Total gain or loss ≈ (1,100)-(1,000)+(50) · Holding-period return ≈ (150)÷(1,000)×100
How to use
- Enter the initial investment cost in one currency.
- Enter ending value and income paid out separately.
- Read the gain or loss and return for the whole holding period.
Examples
- Cost 100, ending value 110 and cash income 5 give a 15% return.
Frequently asked questions
Is this an annual return?
No. It covers the whole interval, regardless of length.
What if dividends were reinvested?
If already included in ending value, do not add them again as cash income.
Can I include additional deposits?
No. Additional deposits or withdrawals require a return method that accounts for each cash flow; this form assumes none.
