Tile calculator
Estimate one straight grid without reusing edge offcuts.
Formula
Columns = ceil((L+g)/(tile L+g)); rows likewise; tiles = ceil(rows × columns × (1+extra/100))
Area length: 12 ft · Area width: 10 ft · Tile length: 12 in · Tile width: 12 in · Grout gap: 0.125 in · Columns ≈ ceil((((12 ft × 0.3048 m/ft)+(0.125 in × 0.0254 m/in))÷((12 in × 0.0254 m/in)+(0.125 in × 0.0254 m/in)))×(1-8.881784197001252e-16)) · Rows ≈ ceil((((10 ft × 0.3048 m/ft)+(0.125 in × 0.0254 m/in))÷((12 in × 0.0254 m/in)+(0.125 in × 0.0254 m/in)))×(1-8.881784197001252e-16)) · Tiles with spares ≈ ceil(((10)×(12)×(1+(5)÷100))×(1-8.881784197001252e-16))
How to use
- Enter the clear area dimensions.
- Enter tile size, grout gap and spares.
- Read rows, columns and total tiles.
Examples
- Two 50 cm tiles with a 1 cm joint cover 1.01 m.
Frequently asked questions
Are perimeter gaps included?
No. Deduct perimeter movement gaps from the measured area first.
Does this optimize cuts?
No. Each edge position uses one tile; offcuts are not reused.
What about diagonal patterns?
This is a straight grid only. Borders, mixed sizes and diagonal layouts need a separate plan.
