Torque Calculator
Calculate torque magnitude from force, pivot distance and the angle between them.
Formula
|τ| = rF sin θ
Force magnitude: 100 N · Distance from pivot: 0.5 m · Torque magnitude ≈ (100 N)×(0.5 m)×sin((90)×pi÷180)
How to use
- Enter force and distance from the pivot to its application point.
- Enter the angle between the position vector and force.
- Read torque magnitude in N·m.
Examples
- 100 N perpendicular to a 0.5 m arm produces 50 N·m.
Frequently asked questions
Is distance the perpendicular lever arm?
No. Enter the full pivot distance; the sine factor gives the perpendicular lever arm.
Does the result show rotation direction?
No. Use the right-hand rule to determine the torque vector direction.
Why is torque zero at 0° or 180°?
The force line passes through the pivot and produces no turning moment.
