Triangular Prism Calculator
Calculate volume and total surface area of a right prism from its three base sides and prism length.
Formula
s=(a+b+c)/2; B=√[s(s−a)(s−b)(s−c)]; V=BL; S=2B+(a+b+c)L.
Base side a: 3 cm · Base side b: 4 cm · Base side c: 5 cm · Prism length L: 10 cm · Volume ≈ (0.0006)×(10 cm × 0.01 m/cm)×1000000 · Total surface area ≈ (2×(0.0006)+((3 cm × 0.01 m/cm)+(4 cm × 0.01 m/cm)+(5 cm × 0.01 m/cm))×(10 cm × 0.01 m/cm))×10000
How to use
- Enter the three triangle sides.
- Enter the perpendicular prism length L.
- Read volume in cm³ and surface area in cm².
Examples
- Base sides 3, 4, 5 cm and length 10 cm give 60 cm³ and 132 cm².
Frequently asked questions
Must the base be a right triangle?
No. Any valid triangle works; the prism’s lateral edges must be perpendicular to the base.
Does surface area include both ends?
Yes. It includes both triangular ends and all three rectangular faces.
Which sides are invalid?
Zero lengths or a side at least equal to the other two combined cannot form the base. Nearly collinear sides are also rejected to avoid rounding errors.
