Velocity Calculator
Find signed average velocity from displacement and elapsed time along one axis.
Formula
v̄ = Δx/Δt; displacement in m, time in s.
Elapsed time: 10 s · Average velocity ≈ (100)÷(10 s)
How to use
- Choose a positive direction.
- Enter signed displacement and positive elapsed time.
- Read the average velocity.
Examples
- A displacement of −20 m in 4 s gives −5 m/s.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as speed?
No. Average speed uses total path length; this uses net displacement.
Does it give instantaneous velocity?
Only if velocity is constant over the interval; otherwise it is the average.
Why can the result be zero?
A round trip has zero displacement even when the traveled distance is positive.
