Wind chill calculator
Estimate the cooling effect of wind on exposed skin.
Formula
WC °F = 35.74 + 0.6215T − 35.75V^0.16 + 0.4275T×V^0.16; T in °F, V in mph.
Air temperature: 30 °F · Wind speed: 10 mph · Wind chill in Fahrenheit ≈ 35.74+0.6215×((30 °F × 0.5555555556 K/°F + 255.3722222 K)×1.8-459.67)-35.75×((10 mph × 0.44704 m/s/mph)÷0.44704)^0.16+0.4275×((30 °F × 0.5555555556 K/°F + 255.3722222 K)×1.8-459.67)×((10 mph × 0.44704 m/s/mph)÷0.44704)^0.16 · Wind chill in Celsius ≈ ((21.24829326)-32)÷1.8
How to use
- Enter air temperature, −40 to 10 °C.
- Enter wind speed, 4.86 to 96.56 km/h.
- Read the NWS wind chill in °C and °F.
Examples
- 30 °F with 10 mph wind gives about 21.2 °F (−6.0 °C).
Frequently asked questions
When is this formula valid?
NWS defines it at 50 °F (10 °C) or lower with wind above 3 mph. This tool uses a narrower input range.
Does it predict an object’s temperature?
No. Wind speeds cooling but does not cool objects below the surrounding air temperature.
Does it include sunshine?
No. The index assumes no warming from the sun and is not an individual exposure limit.
