Frequently asked questions

What does 7 mean?

Read, write and execute: 4 + 2 + 1 = 7.

Are special bits included?

No. This covers ordinary rwx permissions, not setuid, setgid or sticky bits.

Why can leading zeros disappear?

Mode 055 and 55 represent the same ordinary permission bits. The result is octal, not decimal.
