Triangle Area from Coordinates Calculator
Find the area from three points in a Cartesian plane; use the same scale on both axes.
Formula
A = |(x₂−x₁)(y₃−y₁) − (x₃−x₁)(y₂−y₁)| / 2.
Area (square units) ≈ abs(((4)-(0))×((3)-(0))-((0)-(0))×((0)-(0)))÷2
How to use
- Enter the x and y coordinates of each vertex.
- Use one coordinate unit for all six values.
- Read the nonnegative area in square coordinate units.
Examples
- (0,0), (4,0), (0,3) give area 6 square units.
Frequently asked questions
Does the vertex order matter?
No. Reversing the order changes the determinant sign but not its magnitude.
What does zero mean?
The three points are collinear or at least two points coincide.
Can I use latitude and longitude?
No. This is a flat Cartesian calculation, not a geographic area formula.
