Coefficient of Variation Calculator
Calculate relative spread as SD divided by a positive mean, expressed as a percentage. Use a ratio scale with a meaningful zero.
Formula
CV = 100 × SD/mean (%).
Coefficient of variation ≈ 100×(5)÷(50)
How to use
- Enter a positive mean.
- Enter the matching SD in the same unit.
- Read the coefficient of variation in percent.
Examples
- Mean 50 and SD 5 give CV = 10%.
Frequently asked questions
Which measurements are suitable?
Ratio-scale data with a meaningful zero, such as length; Celsius temperature is not suitable.
Can the mean be zero or negative?
This tool accepts only positive means. Near zero, CV is unstable and hard to interpret.
Is SD for a sample or population?
Either is possible; use the mean and SD from the same data and convention.
