Specific Heat Calculator

Find average specific heat from absorbed heat, mass and temperature rise.

Specific heat (J/(kg·K))

100.000

Formula

c = Q/(mΔT)

Absorbed heat: 1,000 J · Sample mass: 2 kg · Specific heat (J/(kg·K)) ≈ (1,000 J)÷((2 kg)×(5))

How to use

  1. Enter heat absorbed by the sample.
  2. Enter its mass and positive temperature rise.
  3. Read specific heat in J/(kg·K).

Examples

  • 1000 J heats 2 kg by 5 °C: c = 100 J/(kg·K).

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a Celsius rise?

Yes. A change of 1 °C equals a change of 1 K; no 273.15 offset applies.

What about melting or boiling?

This model excludes phase changes and latent heat.

Does heat loss matter?

Yes. Use heat absorbed by the sample, excluding container heating and losses.
