Turkey cooking time
USDA planning ranges for whole, fresh or fully thawed turkey, 8–24 lb, at 325°F (163°C).
Formula
Look up the weight band; hours × 60 = minutes. At a shared boundary, use the heavier band.
Whole turkey weight: 12 lb · Unstuffed: lower estimate ≈ 180 · Unstuffed: upper estimate ≈ 225 · Stuffed: lower estimate ≈ 210 · Stuffed: upper estimate ≈ 240
How to use
- Enter whole-bird weight, 8–24 lb (about 3.63–10.89 kg).
- Read the unstuffed or stuffed range; start chilled at 40°F or below.
- Check with a food thermometer; time alone does not prove safety.
Examples
- 16 lb: 225–255 minutes unstuffed; 240–255 stuffed.
Frequently asked questions
What internal temperature is needed?

Can I use a frozen bird or another oven setting?

Is resting included?
No. USDA advises 20 minutes before removing stuffing and carving. Check doneness regardless of the estimated time.
